Acephala: Division by zero

02/06/10  ||  Lord K Philipson

From some site on the Retardnet: “Ukranian top brutal death maniacs Acephala unchain their second act of violent bestiality “Division By Zero” spiced with fast blasting parts, carnivorous low growls, skillfully distorted sound and a great deal of catchy slamming breakdown groovage maximizing the total level of violence in this release. Undoubtedly the most promising Ukrainian brutal death metal act in recent years, which can’t be missed and can’t be forgotten. Missing this album is as impossible as division by zero!”

“Ukrainian death metal”, huh? “Catchy slamming breakdown groovage”?! What the fuck? Wow, expectations are sky rocketing. Thing is, these guys actually do piss out the occasional cool riff (dunno about “slamming breakdown groovage” though), at times giving me Gojira-vibes (listen to the break in track 4) while keeping the death metal style intact. While one could hope for a better production (this one sounds pretty muddy, but it works) and some more variety in their sound – it’s not half as bad as you could expect, considering Ukraine never really put itself on the death metal map, for obvious reasons.

A small downside to Acephallos (ZING!) is the drums. While sounding decent and somewhat technical at times he’s not really nailing the tightness of those double basses, making it sound sloppier than it should be – ultimately bringing down the impression a little.

Oh, and ofcourse we aren’t listening to Jörgen Sandström or David Vincent here either. This dude is anonymous vocal-wise, belching out your Standard Growl Of The Week.

While not completely without cool Decapitated influences and the every now-and- then Cannibal Corpse riff – Acephala will not make much of an impression in the metal world.

“Satan’s Asshole” – that title is the best part of this recording. But it’s not like gems like ““Borned in Fraternal Grave”, “Faggot on Pitchfork”, “More than Hash” and “Syphilis in Own Juice” completely blow either.
